MLA: Allied Status of the Alliance for the Study of Adoption and Culture
After careful deliberation, the Executive Committee of the Alliance for the Study of Adoption and Culture recently voted to give up its status as an Allied Organization of the Modern Language Association. Our decision was driven by the MLA’s Resolution 2017-1, and while the Executive Committee does not take a position on BDS, we find the decision to prohibit certain kinds of speaking and acting violates our organization’s commitment to free speech and action, especially for and about the historically silenced and oppressed. Thus, our Executive Committee members voted to sever our ties with the MLA until such time as it recommits to open discourse.
Please contact an Executive Committee member if you have any questions about this decision.
